Firefox 3 features you probably dont know

July 8th, 2008

1. To duplicate tabs press Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) while dragging a tab to create a duplicate of the dragged tab including its history.
2. To move tabs to another window just drag a tab and drop it on another window to move it. If the dragged tab is the last one in its window, it will be closed.
3. To resize the search bar you can drag the handler between them (invisible on Windows and Linux) to resize it.
4. To add keyword search select Manage Search Engines… in the search engines menu to open the Search Engines Manager, select a search engine, press Edit Keyword… and enter a few characters to define one. Now you can enter the keyword followed by your search terms in the location bar to search with that plugin.
5. For discontinuous selections make a selection with the mouse, press Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) and make additional selections to copy or print just what you want.may
6. For integrated add-ons there is no need to visit Mozilla Add-ons because Firefox 3 brings it to you directly from the Add-ons Manager new Get Add-ons page: search, find and install with a single click.
8. To check your crashes enter about:crashes in the location bar to get a list of crashes submitted by Breakpad (Mozilla’s crash reporter). Click on a crash report to get details provided by Socorro, Mozilla’s crash reports server.

Thank you for this list. Especially for number 5. I’ve wanted to ability to do that for years.

  • 3. dennis  |  July 9th, 2008 at 23:21

ditto the thanks. I thought I was a sophisticated user, but they all came as news to me. I’ve wanted the casual duplication of windows for a long time.

On my version of Firefox 3.0 (Debian GNU Linux 32 bits), about:crashes gives me the following alert: “The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded.”
Is about:crashes a Windows only feature? (half serious question)

Thanks for the other ones anyway: they’re great!

Very good list. I’ve seen other lists of so-called tips and tricks that any power user worth his/her salt already knows, but this one had several that I’d never seen before.

I agree about the discontinuous selections–nice feature!

So far I’m liking FF3 and the little enhancements that make things so much easier. On top of these, the new keyword-driven address bar rocks my world.

  • 9. Wow  |  July 10th, 2008 at 1:04

    Haabda… this is a system-wide ability that’s been available for a decade…

Adding keyword searches is *much* easier than that #4.

Go to a page with a string input used for searching, like imdb.org. Then simply right click that string field and select “add keyword for this search”. The normal bookmarking UI comes up, enter a keyword and a name for it and add. Lets call it “imdb”.

Now you can type directly into the url-field that keyword followed by a search string. Example:

    imdb memento

And you end up directly on the result page just as if you surfed to the page, inserted the string and submitted!

Thankyou - some of these answer some of the flaws I’ve seen in ff3 so far.

Moving tabs, specifically, is nice to see. I’d previously been unable to get that to work (my familiarity with galeon had altered my bias it seems).

    thankyou =D

  • 14. Nemo  |  July 10th, 2008 at 2:47

further followup… when context clicking an image, I have missed ‘view image in new tab’ from galeon…

in ff3, hold down control or shift when context-clicking an image, and when you select ‘view image’ it will open in a new tab (control) window (shift)

    Excellent!

Eh…All the ‘new features’ Firefox is implementing, Opera already has them.

  • 20. Crash  |  July 10th, 2008 at 21:27

You could drag tabs into another firefox window in version 2. I don’t know if it would close the tab in the other instance, but I definitely know that it was possible.

  • 21. Jake  |  July 10th, 2008 at 23:11

@S: Firefox 3 on Mandriva 2008.1 spring is pulling up about:crashes just fine. Only one crash there though.

  • 22. Dwayne Charrington  |  July 11th, 2008 at 3:08

Wow. I’ve been a Firefox user for ages now, and I didn’t know about most of these features. I find the tab duplication feature pretty fascinating, how you can drag and drop tabs into other windows. Its pretty impressive.

Now if there was only a command to make Firefox not crash so much :P

I have to agree with #15, Opera has a head start on these sort of things. Thanks anyways though! It’s nice to know I can be more productive in my second favorite browser.

  • 32. Mike  |  July 14th, 2008 at 9:40

Hey Nemo, that ctrl or shift thing works for view image in ff2 also, but I didn’t know that until I read your comment and tried it. Thanks. To add further to it, holding ctrl down opens image in new tab, and holding shift down opens image in new window.

  • 33. sunborn  |  July 16th, 2008 at 23:03

    @S and Jake:

about:crashes doesn’t work on Hardy Heron either, Maybe something the deb makers didn’t like??

  • 34. ken creten  |  July 17th, 2008 at 3:51

Why do people comment on OTHER browsers when this is obviously about Firefox? If I wanted to know about another browser I’d look that up.

Opera people, please. No one except you cares.

    inOPERAble? LOL

Trolls have to keep taking swipes in comments on posts like this beause they are incredibly desperate for inOPERAble to be relevant.

Every time I read a troll comment about inOPERAble from now on I will read whatever it there, but know this is what is really being written:

“But inOPERAble’s already got this, inOPERAble’s had that for years … WHY DOESN’T ANYBODY CARE ABOUT inOPERAble? My browser is going to die if we can’t get at least 1% … sob sob … oh inOPERAble, life if so unfair.”
