Firefox devs aim for 30% market share next year

August 14th, 2007

In the face of competition from Internet Explorer 7 and now Apple’s Safari, the Mozilla Corporation intends to re-think its marketing strategy in order to further boost the market share of its Firefox web browser. According to a report by VNUnet, Mozilla hopes that Firefox will reach a 30% market share by June 2008.

To reach this goal, the organization wants to tweak the Firefox icon so its purpose is clearer and also position it more prominently on the Windows desktop or quick launch bar. Additionally, the prompt that asks users whether they want to make Firefox their default browser will be revamped so it looks “nicer.” Those changes are meant to make users who download Firefox likelier to keep using the browser. Right now, Mozilla statistics suggest only half the users who download Firefox end up installing it, and only half of those become active users.
