The number of broadband users opting to have Firefox as their web browser rather than Internet Explorer is increasing, according to new research.
Monitoring firm XiTi has found that the number of people using Firefox is increasing in every European country, with almost one in three now choosing the alternative browser.
Launched by Mozilla Corporation in 2004, the Firefox browser has experienced its biggest gains in Finland and Slovenia, while across the 32 nations the browser’s market share extended by 3.1 per cent over the last four months.
The browser now holds 28 per cent of the European market, while Internet Explorer’s hold has slipped from 73 per cent last year to 66.5 per cent.
Before it was first released, Firefox underwent a series of name changes amid trademark issues with other firms.
Names such as Phoenix and Firebird were both considered before the final name was settled upon.
