Mozilla launches official Firefox support site alpha

August 4th, 2007

official Firefox support site

Mozilla’s marketing team is in the process of creating an official community-driven support site that will focus on delivering comprehensive Firefox documentation that is written for an audience of users with a “slightly below average” level of computing experience. The content, which will primarily take the form of tutorials and troubleshooting guides, will be written by volunteer contributors.

Compared to the free-for-all editing model associated with most wikis, the content creation process for Mozilla’s support site is a bit conservative. In order to ensure the highest possible level of quality and accuracy, all content will face two separate “editorial approval processes”—which will evaluate style and content—before publication. Further content refinement will be based on user feedback. Users will be able to rate and comment on the helpfulness of all articles in the support system and writers who produce highly-rated articles will receive recognition through a “volunteer points system.”

The marketing team put out a call for writers late last month, and since then over 50 support topics have been claimed by volunteers and the articles are at various stages of completion. Mozilla announced the launch of the support site alpha today, and is inviting testers to get involved. The support site alpha is currently accessible at support-stage.mozilla.org.
